Oil, Gold, and War in Sudan: Natural Resources and the Armed Conflicts
This joint public lecture by two specialists on Sudan will examine the role of natural resources in Sudan’s armed conflicts, focusing on how oil and gold have shaped patterns of violence, governance, and wartime economies. Particular attention is given to the court case in Sudan involving representatives of Lundin Oil and its broader implications for corporate accountability in conflict-affected settings. The presentations by the two speakers will be followed by a conversation with the audience. Access the invitation as PDF pdf, 174 kB..
Dr. Enrico Ille, Institute of African Studies of the University of Leipzig, will focus his presentation on the continuities and differences between the oil sector in the 2000s and the gold sector in the 2010s and thereafter, including complications for debates on, and for legal and political action towards, corporate accountability and complicity in war finance. Associate Prof. Johan Brosché, Dept. of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, will focus on the role of oil in Sudan and how it has shaped patterns of violence and governance. Particular attention is given to the ongoing court case in Sweden, in which two representatives of Lundin Oil are accused of complicity in war crimes. Read more about the work of Johan Brosché here
