The Curse of Coal Mining in Mozambique
On Thursday 18 September, Paulo Mahumane, PhD Student in Cultural Anthropology, successfully defended his thesis The Curse of Coal Mining: Residents’ Resistance to Industrial Coal Mining in Moatize District, Mozambique.
Faculty Examiner was Professor Bjørn Enge Bertelsen, University of Bergen. The examination committee was composed of Professor Anneli Ekblom, Associate Professor Jesper Bjarnesen, Associate Professor Claudia Merli, and Associate Professor Emil Sandström. Three supervisors have guided Paulo's research: Professor Sten Hagberg, Professor Annika Teppo, and Professor Carla Braga.
Paulo's PhD thesis is part of Sida's Research Collaboration with the University of Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique, more specifically the research and research training programme Strengthening Municipal Democracy and Local Development in Mozambique, jointly coordinated by Carla Braga, and Sten Hagberg.
