Claude Ake Chair Screens Documentary
Claude Ake Chair 2025 Prof. Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Emerita Professor of the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy at the University of Ghana on Monday 17 November screened the documentary film she co-produced in 2022 "When women speak", followed by a conversation with Beatrice Anowah Brew, former Rotary Peace Fellow (Class XXII) MSc in Peace and Conflict Studies from Uppsala University.
This documentary is more than a historical account; it is an act of reclaiming narrative space for Ghanaian women, who played pivotal roles in public life amid periods of military, single-party, and multi-party rule. Through the voices of sixteen remarkable women–leaders in law, media, academia, politics, and activism – the film challenges the male-dominated record of nation-building and confronts negative stereotypes, offering new resources for educators, researchers, and policymakers. The film is available for free online, we encourage all to watch it!
Kajsa Hallberg Adu works as a research coordinator with the Forum and is a former PhD student of Professor Adomako Ampofo. She was the organiser and host of this event that engaged 30 students and faculty.
Kajsa says:
" - Professor Adomako Ampofo's mentorship not only shaped my academic journey, but also deepened my commitment to feminist knowledge production and transformative education. Tonight’s screening is an opportunity to witness the impact of her scholarship in action
—a living archive that testifies to the collective efforts of Ghanaian women to shape history, challenge norms, and imagine futures."
