Making History: Methodological choices in historical research

  • Date: 4 June 2024, 09:15–15:45
  • Location: Blåsenhus
  • Type: Conference
  • Organiser: PhD students and Centre for Integrated Research on Culture and Society, CIRCUS
  • Contact person: Maya Ström

The PhD Colloquium for Historical Studies has been an initiative to bridge the gap between the three traditional disciplines of history; History, Economic History and History of Ideas. It has sought to create a space where PhD research can be discussed across divisional borders, in order to encourage interdisciplinary networks, facilitate research projects, and improve the conditions of PhD-students in the historical disciplines. Equally, PhD-students outside of these three traditional historical fields are invited to attend.

The workshop will feature the presentations of senior researchers within each of the three fields on the topic of methodology.

The focus will be on discussing different methodological choices together with the senior researchers. As such the three sessions will consist of shorter presentations by a total of nine researchers prominent in their respective fields, followed by a half-hour panel discussion for each session (see next page for schedule).

The first session focuses on Modern History and with a particular focus on Gender – an important field of study to all three historical disciplines. That will be followed by a second session, focusing on Early Modern History and specific methodological challenges which might come with such historical research. The third session will focus on what might be seen as unorthodox approaches to history, and covers forays into visual culture, ethnography and digital methodology.

The day ends with a circa hour long workshop in smaller groups, followed by a social activity and a voluntary dinner.

In order to attend, please register here. Regardless of if you have attended a previous seminar or not, you are very welcome to participate.
