Ethical considerations on watches with GPS trackers to children

An increased number of parents are equipping their children with watches with built-in GPS trackers, to know where they are. It is a way to reduce their worry and gain a sense of control. But this kind of surveillance method can also limit children's personal integrity.

A smart watch with a built-in GPS tracker enables parents to follow their child's every move in real time. Jessica Nihlén Fahlquist, Associate Professor in practical philosophy and Senior Lecturer in biomedical ethics at the Center for Research Ethics & Bioethics, is highlighting the ethical considerations parents should bear in mind before equipping their children with such devices.

"Tracking children can limit their personal integrity," says Jessica Nihlén Fahlquist.
