In this seminar, esethu monakali explores the material, affective, and temporal dimensions of trans masculine urban geographies in two South African cities.
Drawing from life history interviews with trans masculine people living in urban areas around Johannesburg and Cape Town, they attend to how space shapes how trans masculine identities emerge, are negotiated, and made visible or elided in normative registers and frames of recognisability/legibility. Further, esethu critically considers how intersecting identity positions (sexuality, race, class) shape the syntax animating how trans masculinities are understood, experienced, and articulated.
