New study by HEFUU researchers in Journal of American Heart Association

A new study written by HEFUU researchers Erik Grönqvist, Jonathan Siverskog and Bertil Lindahl use a natural experimental to investigate the effectiveness of the drug ticagrelor in routine clinical care for patients hospitalized with myocardial infarction. The article is published in published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

The efficacy of ticagrelor was demonstrated by the randomized PLATO trial, but past observational studies have produced conflicting findings on its effectiveness in a real-world setting. The study exploits differences in the timing and speed of ticagrelor implementation between treatment centers, as a source of random treatment assignment. The study finds that patients admitted to treatment centers with higher past ticagrelor use had a reduced 12-month mortality rate. The risk reduction was attributable solely to a higher likelihood of being treated with ticagrelor. The results support the external validity of the PLATO trial on ticagrelor effectiveness.
