Atherosclerosis, characterized by plaque or calcified deposits in arterial vessels, is a common condition with prevalence increasing with age. Although its exact causes and development are not yet fully understood, the consequences often require costly medical intervention and long-term monitoring. In this seminar, I will explore how image processing techniques can aid in the diagnosis and prognostication of atherosclerosis, with a particular focus on the coronary arteries and the aortic valve. For the coronary arteries, the main theme will be segmentation of the coronary artery tree—its clinical importance, current state of the art, and its impact on downstream tasks such as personalized blood flow simulation. In the case of the aortic valve, I will discuss approaches to delineating calcium deposits, comparing current manual practices with emerging automatic methods.
