Title: Power allocation problems in backscatter communication networks

Abstract: The next generation of wireless communication systems is expected to result in a dramatic increase in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. These devices may come with varying requirements, based on the application. Some of these may have very high requirements for energy usage, but low data rate requirements.

Different solutions have been proposed for powering such devices. The topic of this talk will be one of those, backscatter communication, in which devices communicate by reflecting incoming radio frequency waves. In particular, we will discuss the power allocation problem in this type of communication networks.

We will demonstrate, using a simulated model, that the technology is a viable solution for powering low-energy IoT devices in certain scenarios. Part of our work is theoretical, where we can give a fast and simple algorithm for obtaining the optimal solution in certain cases. Furthermore, we will discuss the possibilities and difficulties when trying to generalize these theoretical results to the general case.
