Title: The mathematics of Brain Imaging

Abstract: How is the brain wired with nerve fibres? Which parts of the brain are important for mathematics? Can you slow down brain atrophy with physical exercise? In what way are the communication networks in the brain organized?

These are all examples of questions that neuroscientists investigate using brain imaging. In turn, brain imaging techniques rely heavily on mathematical and statistical models. In this talk, I will present an overview of (some of) the models and techniques used for functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). In doing that, I will return to the questions posed above.

This is intended to be a broad overview giving some insight to the extremely diverse line-up of mathematics that is needed to make the gears of brain imaging turn – regardless of your area of Mathematical and/or Statistical expertise there is a place for you in brain imaging!

Examples of mathematical topics include Partial Differential Equations, Graph Theory, 3D-Random Fields, Tensor Calculus, and Spatio-Temporal models.
