Title: Advancements in Deep Learning in Neurological Disorders

Abstract:

The development of precise neuroimaging biomarkers of neurodegeneration is essential to enable therapeutic drug trials in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). The hallmark feature of PD is the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra. These neurons contain neuromelanin pigment that can be imaged using neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique. Furthermore, isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) comprises REM sleep parasomnia, featuring unpleasant dreams and/or acting out the dreams in real. Given that iRBD is considered a prodromal stage of parkinsonism, a mild SN damage is also visible using neuromelanin-sensitive MRI.

In this talk, I will demonstrate how deep learning can help us investigate damage in the brain and also in the development of MRI biomarkers in such neurodegenerative disorders.
