Abstract: This seminar introduces agent-based modeling using the NetLogo programming language. The first example explores the statistical physics of parking with cars, where both analytical calculations and simulations in Python and NetLogo produce consistent results. We then shift focus to interacting agents, examining how cars collectively move in traffic. Following this, we present examples of emergent behavior driven by simple rules, ranging from spin systems to the collective behavior of ants. I will also showcase an opinion dynamics model I developed for prediction markets. Toward the end of the talk, we will explore scenarios where agents employ adaptive strategies, such as in the El Farol Bar problem, highlighting the integration of machine learning with agent-based models to discover optimal individual strategies.

This is a lecture in the seminar series held by CIM (Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics).
