Abstract: Main parts of Norway and especially the northern parts are characterized by terrain conditions where bridges play a crucial role in connecting people, villages and business activities. Due to the topography, each bridge has a key role in the road network, and each single one may have disproportionate effects on many aspects of the society in case of collapse or traffic reduction. In the northern region a significant percentage of the bridges have been exposed to extreme environmental conditions for decades and now also increased traffic loadings due to the expanding sea food industry.

Case study of Herøysund Bridge in Nordland Fylke and Skattørsund Bridge in Troms Fylke along with the state of infrastructure is presented in this talk. The problems and limitations that are faced in the monitoring of bridges are highlighted in this lecture and more interestingly how pure and applied mathematics can play a crucial role in resolving some of these problems.

This is a lecture in the seminar series held by CIM (Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics).
