Interdisciplinary Junior Scholars’ Workshop: "Emotions and the Psyche: Science and History"

PhD students and postdocs of all disciplines who are doing research in topics related to emotions, psychotherapy, history of science, and medieval history are invited to present and discuss their work with Professor Barbara H. Rosenwein (Loyola University Chicago) and Professor Elizabeth Lunbeck (Harvard University). Registration is required and open until April 11, 2023.

Elizabeth Lunbeck is Professor of the History of Science and Chair of the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University. Her research focuses on the history of the human sciences, and in particular psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. She has published influential works both on the histories of psychiatric treatments and knowledge, and specifically on the epistemology of these fields.

Barbara Rosenwein is Professor Emerita at Loyola University Chicago, Department of History and a historian of the middle ages. Her work has established emotions as an object of study in the humanities and created bridges to other disciplines by historicizing contemporary research in neuroscience and psychiatry regarding the biological and social ontology of emotions. Her most recent work is on the long history on anger and love.

At the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from these two prominent scholars. The number of participants is limited and registration requires a short synopsis of the research you wish to discuss. This will be shared with Professors Rosenwein and Lunbeck ahead of time.

Participants of all disciplines and scientific domains are explicitly encouraged and welcome to register!

The workshop is a collaborative effort of the CIRCUS-funded Anxiety Research Network, the Centre for Medical Humanities, the Department of Literature and the Department of History of Science and Ideas.
