Title: From in vitro permeability to human absorption: using cMdr1 KO MDCK cells to estimate Peff and fa

Welcome to the first SweDeliver webinar of the semester, organized by the Technical Platform 2: 3R and Clinical Translation. This time, we will have the pleasure of listening to Dr Kristian Beran at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany and Associate Professor Maria Karlgren, Uppsala University.

Kristian Beran is a pharmaceutical scientist who conducted his doctoral research within the InPharma European Industrial Doctorate program, a collaborative training network focused on industrially relevant questions in oral formulation development. His work in InPharma focused on biopharmaceutical profiling of novel active pharmaceutical ingredients and the developability of oral dosage forms. In this role, he contributed to translating early molecule properties into formulation relevant decisions, with particular attention to the refined Developability Classification System (rDCS), in vitro methods and in silico tools that support discovery and early oral drug product development.

During the SweDeliver webinar, Kristian will share insights from his permeability work with MDCK cells and discuss the paper “Canine Mdr1 Knockout MDCK Cells Reliably Estimate Human Small Intestinal Permeability (Peff) and Fraction Absorbed (fa)”, published in Molecular Pharmaceutics in 2025. The paper evaluates a canine Mdr1 knockout MDCK cell model for estimating human intestinal permeability and fraction absorbed, highlighting its potential value for permeability classification in oral drug development.

The webinar will also include a brief presentation by Associate Professor Maria Karlgren, who will present the work on MDCK cell models for active transport at the Department of Pharmacy, Uppsala University.
