Randomised trials are important. Their results can lead to the development of evidence-based guideline recommendations and the introduction of better treatments and models of care, or help to stop the use of harmful or ineffective interventions.

However, these benefits are not shared equally. Many people do not benefit because they are ignored or forgotten in the design, running, analysis, and reporting of trials. This talk will outline some of the problems, but spend more time on things that trial teams can do to ensure that the people who could benefit are recognised, and that deliberate efforts are made to allow them to take part, and stay involved, in trials.

Inclusivity in trials is not a ‘nice to have’, but central to more informative trials. This is because the results are more likely to apply to those who could benefit, and the intervention be delivered in a way that these individuals can accept and engage with. Inclusive trials are, in short, better science.
