Welcome Vian Rajabzadeh!

Postdoktor Vian Rajabzadeh

Vian Rajabzadeh is looking forward to getting started in her role as a postdoctoral researcher.

Welcome to U-CARE and the research group Healthcare Sciences and e-Health, Vian Rajabzadeh! Vian has just moved to Uppsala from London, and she will work as a postdoctoral researcher with a focus on Global Health.

Survival rates among children treated for cancer

As one of Vian’s first project, she will conduct a systematic review on survival rates for children in Sweden who have been treated for cancer.

– I will look into survival rates in children of immigrant parents compared to children of non-immigrant parents, Vian explains. The review will serve as a foundation for exploring potential links between disease outcomes and the conditions in the environment where people are born, live, learn, work, and so on.

Background in Global Mental Health

Vian has a broad health research experience. Following her Master’s in Epidemiology at Imperial College London, she worked as a data analyst, and later as a clinical trial coordinator. Her PhD at Queen Mary University of London developed her skills as a mixed methods researcher. The main theme of Vian’s PhD project was global mental health.

– The first phase of my PhD involved a conceptual review that explored how the term ‘global mental health’ is defined within the academic literature. Based on the conceptual framework that emerged from that review, I then evaluated a specific global mental health programme delivering psychosocial care across three low- and middle-income countries. One of the key findings is that collaborative research programmes can connect the local with the global.

Most recently, Vian completed a postdoctoral role at Imperial College London. She was evaluating the digital component of a care intervention designed for young people in mental health crisis presenting at the emergency department.

Vian is looking forward to start working at U-CARE and use her research experiences.

– I look forward to getting started and applying my experiences in both global mental health and digital health. This position feels like the perfect fit for me, Vian says.

Starts a new chapter

Vian’s new position does not only mean new research opportunities. It also means that she has left London for Uppsala.

– I’ve been to Sweden a couple of times before and I love spending time here. At the same time, I’ve left my family, my friends, and my cat Noushie back in the U.K. So it’s a big thing for me to come here and leave everyone I love.

One of the things Vian enjoys doing when she is not working is to meditate.

– I live in a tiny guest house in Gamla Uppsala, close to the burial mounds from the Viking Age. I’ve found a spot there which I think has been a place for meditation for many years.
