U-CARE PhD candidate gave presentation at international cardiology conference in London
At the end of August and the beginning of September, the ESC Congress 2024 was organised in London, the world's largest conference in cardiac care. For four days, thousands of experts from all over the world gathered to share the latest research and new treatment methods in cardiology.
One of the participants was U-CARE's PhD candidate Philip Leissner, who traveled to London together with his supervisor, Professor Erik Olsson. Philip presented a study that examined how the use of beta blockers, a medication given to patients after a myocardial infarction, affects mental health.
We have investigated what possible psychological side effects beta blockers can have, says Philip. Our results show that there may be a risk of increased depressive symptoms. The study is part of my PhD project which focuses on how cardiology can benefit from psychological research.
Although many presentations during the conference focused primarily on the physiological aspects of heart disease, there were several features that highlighted the role of psychology in care.
– We met, among others, a psychologist from Australia who presented research on stress linked to heart disease, says Philip. It was also inspiring to learn about methods and study designs used by other researchers.
After the conference, Philip took the opportunity to discover London's cultural offerings and visited, among other things, the National Gallery and Tate Modern.
