Starting today, U-CARE PhD candidate Ella Thiblin is participating in an international conference on research methods in Edinburgh, Scotland. During the conference, she will present a poster on the use of personal invitation letters for clinical trials.

The 'International Clinical Trials Methodology Conference 2024' runs for four days, and the Swedish Cancer Society has approved a travel grant for Ella Thiblin to participate.

What will you do at the conference?

– I will present a poster on a method exploring how to improve recruitment to clinical studies, says Ella Thiblin. It is generally difficult to recruit for clinical studies, especially when it comes to mental health. I will present how we worked with the recruitment of parents of children treated for cancer within the research project ENGAGE.

How did you carry out that recruitment?

– We conducted a so-called 'Study Within A Trial' (SWAT) where we compared study participants' willingness to participate in the study depending on whether they received a personalised or non-personalised invitation. One group of study participants was invited with personalised invitation letters, while another group was invited with non-personalised invitation letters.

How do you think other researchers can benefit from how you conducted the study?

– I want to show how one can carry out this type of method studies. In the long run, I hope it can lead to improved study procedures in clinical trials.

What are you most looking forward to?

– I look forward to learning more about different research methods. Hopefully, I can bring some insights to the studies we work with at U-CARE, concludes Ella Thiblin.
