How can research findings be communicated in a clear, engaging, and visual way? That’s the focus of a new two-day workshop, which U-CARE is proud to host.

The workshop is organised by U-CARE and will be led by the experts Elena Mondino and Mads Lüchow, from the communication agency Visualize your Science. It includes two sessions: The first session focuses on graphical abstracts, how to present a scientific article through a visual summary. The second session covers how to design scientific posters that capture attention and communicate a message effectively.

The workshop is aimed at researchers, research assistants, PhD students, and others working with research communication within Uppsala University.

– We look forward to two inspiring and creative sessions, says research coordinator Clara Dahlgren who organises the workshop together with PhD student Luciana Terceiro. It got fully booked already after a few days, which indicates that there is a great demand for these types of workshops.

Data visualization expert Elena Mondino, will lead the first workshop session.

What do you hope participants will take away from the Visualize your research workshop?
– Participants will take home two main tools: graphic design concepts and theory, and a practical approach to creating graphical abstracts and posters. By using visual strategies, they’ll learn how to better communicate their research, making it more accessible and impactful in a world with shorter attention spans, says Elena Mondino.

What are some common challenges researchers face when trying to visualize their work, and how do you help them overcome these?
– A common issue is determining how much to include in visuals, especially when the audience’s level of knowledge varies. We encourage researchers to assume their target audience knows less than they expect, which helps ensure the visuals are accessible and understandable to a wider audience.

U-CARE’s Programme Director, Professor Louise von Essen, highlights the importance of the workshop:

– Communicating science clearly and creatively is becoming increasingly important. This workshop offers our researchers a valuable opportunity to explore new tools and approaches for reaching a wider audience.
