This year’s U-CARE Venue brought together almost one hundred participants in Uppsala University’s Main Building for two inspiring days filled with insightful presentations, symposia, and engaging discussions around the theme:
‘Smarter Science – How can we conduct high-quality healthcare research more efficiently?’
Shared insights and recurring themes

Throughout the conference, speakers and participants explored how to improve the efficiency of healthcare research without compromising on quality.
Some of the key themes that emerged included:
• The importance of methodological innovation, including adaptive trial designs and Bayesian statistical methods
• Strengthening patient and public involvement in research processes
• Making better use of resources by embedding research into clinical practice
• Building systems and collaborations that enable open and transparent science
Learning from diverse perspectives
The programme featured contributions from researchers and professionals from several countries and disciplines.
For instance, Benjamin Speich (University of Basel) discussed the costs, hurdles, and innovations that shape trial efficiency, while Philip Pallmann (Cardiff University) and Marcus Bendtsen (Linköping University) explored adaptive and Bayesian statistical methods as tools for trials.
Other sessions highlighted the value of operational and system efficiency, from Cristin Lind’s presentation on patient and public contribution in research, to Marco Seeber’s talk on the evolution of scientific publishing, and Angeliki Adamaki’s reflections on making Open Science work in practice.
A particularly appreciated talk was given by Helena Hvitfeldt, Head of Research, Education, and Innovation at Vårdbolaget Tiohundra, who shared an inspiring talk about how research can be successfully embedded into clinical practice.
The event concluded with Shaun Treweek’s thought-provoking talk on how to make randomised trials more informative, relevant and useful, followed by a farewell address from U-CARE’s Programme Director Louise von Essen.
‘The importance of collaboration’

Among this year’s participants was Abla Sami, Research Assistant at U-CARE, who reflects on her experience:
- It was inspiring to meet people with so many different backgrounds, and to hear from international experts who are passionate about improving healthcare research.
- My key takeaway was the importance of collaboration between different interest holders ¬– like funders, patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers – to make the research more relevant, meaningful and impactful, says Abla Sami.
Thank you and welcome back
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this year’s U-CARE Venue such an inspiring event, from the organising team and speakers to all participants who shared their insights and ideas.
We look forward to seeing you again at next year’s conference!
