U-CARE organises workshop on visualising research

Last year’s workshop was highly appreciated. This year, the focus is even more on hands-on work using digital tools. Photo: Luciana Terceiro
This spring, U-CARE is organising a workshop on research visualisation in collaboration with the organisation Visualize your Science. Interest in the workshop has been high, and all available spots were filled quickly.
Vector graphics and video animations
The workshop is divided into two sessions with different focuses. During the first workshop session, participants will learn the basics of drawing using vector graphics. The second session will focus on creating video animations based on the illustrations developed at the first session.
Ida Österman Menander is one of the workshop organisers and describes the aim of the initiative:
– This is a hands-on workshop where participants will learn the basics of how to visualise their research in an engaging and accessible way. This may include, for example, creating graphical abstracts for scientific articles or short video summaries of research findings.
Participants will work in the software Affinity Designer and Powerpoint, both of which are freely available to all staff at Uppsala University.
Meeting a broad need for skills development
The workshop is aimed both at people early in their academic careers, such as research assistants and PhD students, and at senior researchers who wish to further develop how they communicate their research.
– I hope that participants will feel confident using their new skills beyond the workshop itself, says Ida Österman Menander. Ideally, the workshop will contribute to new perspectives on research communication and an understanding that communication does not have to rely only on written text. The fact that we quickly reached the maximum number of participants shows that there is a strong demand for this type of competence within research.
