A recently published study co-authored by U-CARE’s Guest Professor Shaun Treweek presents a new framework designed to help researchers make clinical trials more inclusive of people experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage. The study addresses a challenge in health research, where groups with the greatest burden of disease are often underrepresented in trials.

Supporting inclusion in trial design

People experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage are often underrepresented in clinical trials, despite having a higher burden of disease. To address this, the authors developed the INCLUDE Socioeconomic Disadvantage Framework, which supports trial teams in identifying and reducing barriers to participation related to trial design, interventions and procedures. The framework was developed in collaboration with public contributors and is freely available via the Trial Forge website.

‘Inclusive trials are essential for equitable healthcare’

– When people experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage are excluded from trials, the evidence base risks reinforcing health inequalities. This framework helps researchers take practical steps towards more inclusive trial design, says Shaun Treweek, Guest Professor at U-CARE and one of the authors of the study.
