The 2023 Göran Gustafsson lecture puts focus on antibiotic resistance

Antibiotic resistance experts from various fields gathered on April 13th, 2023, for the Göran Gustafsson lecture in medicine, an annual event arranged at Uppsala University, together with the Göran Gustafsson Foundation for Research at Uppsala University and KTH. This year's lecture was part of a half-day symposium, and featured the keynote lecture by Professor Gerry Wright, Executive Director for Canada's Global Nexus for Pandemics and Biological Threats and Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, McMaster University, Canada.

The Göran Gustafsson lecture is arranged in honor of Professor Göran Gustafsson, a renowned physicist and mathematician, and aims to highlight breakthroughs and innovations in science and technology. This year's lecture and symposium focused on antibiotic resistance and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to addressing this global issue. The Uppsala Antibiotic Center had the pleasure to co-organize this event with Uppsala University’s disciplinary domain of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Professor Wright is an internationally recognized leader in the fields of microbiology, molecular biology, and drug discovery. He has authored over 240 manuscripts which focus on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of bacterial antibiotic resistance. In his lecture, Professor Wright discussed the challenges and opportunities facing the global community in the fight against AMR as well as the advances his team is making towards antibiotic discovery. He also highlighted the importance of outside-the-box thinking, encouraging those engaging with this issue to look beyond their daily research to attain a more complete perspective of this multidisciplinary issue.

Aside from the keynote, the symposium featured numerous other experts representing other fields of antimicrobial resistance research. Speakers highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to AMR that requires expertise from business research, the natural sciences, and humanities, among others. The general atmosphere was one of curiosity, inspiration, and increased awareness, with many participants expressing an improved appreciation for this increasingly relevant topic.
