UAC publishes Activity Report for 2022–2024

The Uppsala Antibiotic Center has released its new Activity Report, summarizing three years of research, education, outreach, and collaboration in the field of antimicrobial resistance. The report captures a period marked by growth, strong scientific output, and expanding national and international engagement.
Between 2022 and 2024, our members published 33 scientific articles in international journals, and nine PhD students defended their theses and graduated from the research school. Since its inception, our center has organized 57 seminars, 13 workshops, and four international symposia. Two editions of the Uppsala Antibiotic Days gathered more than 250 participants each, confirming the conference as a key multidisciplinary meeting place for AMR in Sweden and beyond.
The report also marks an important milestone in the history of the center. UAC reached its tenth anniversary since it was first proposed, and received confirmation of continued funding from Uppsala University, securing operations at least until 2028. A new phase, UAC 2.0, began this year with a stronger mandate for PhD training and an expanded educational mission.
Research at UAC spanned the full AMR field. Projects addressed bacterial evolution and persistence, new antibiotics and drug combinations, rapid diagnostics, surveillance platforms, environmental and agricultural resistance, microbiota and host–pathogen interactions, as well as policy, governance, and antibiotic use in global healthcare systems. This breadth reflects the center’s multidisciplinary profile and continued focus on linking molecular research with clinical, societal, and environmental perspectives.
Education remained at the core of UAC’s mission. Monthly international webinar seminars, in-house PhD courses on AMR and science communication, and a full-center research retreat supported both academic depth and cross-disciplinary exchange. The Göran Gustafsson Symposium on sustainable AMR solutions and the joint ENABLE-2 symposium on antibiotic discovery further strengthened dialogue between relevant stakeholders.
Public outreach and awareness continued through regular participation in SciFest, a growing program of school visits, and the ongoing production of The AMR Studio podcast. During the period, the podcast released new regular and special episodes and passed 10,000 total global plays. UAC also led a large international community engagement initiative together with ReAct and Antibiotic Smart Sweden, gathering over 400 participants from more than 60 countries to explore the role of communities in AMR action.
The years 2022–2024 also laid the foundation for long-term collaboration beyond Sweden. UAC took part in launching the Nordic AMR Centers Alliance and the ENLIGHT AMR Network, creating new structures for shared training, research exchange, and joint funding efforts across Europe.
Looking ahead, the next funding period will broaden UAC’s educational reach to include all PhD students working on AMR at Uppsala University and SLU, and a new UAC Research Community will open its doors to the broarder Uppsala AMR community. New international scholar visits, increased conference support for PhD students, and deeper Nordic and European collaboration are also planned as part of UAC’s continued development.
