The Uppsala Antibiotic Center congratulates Professor Diarmaid Hughes on his election as a Fellow of the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM). The new Fellows were announced on 19 March 2026, with 95 researchers elected this year in recognition of their scientific excellence and long-standing contributions to microbiology.

Diarmaid is a Professor at Uppsala University and one of UAC's most engaged members, contributing actively to both research and the education of the next generation of scientists since the center started. His work focuses on researching how antibiotic resistance evolves in bacteria, a question that sits at the heart of what UAC was built to address, as well as contributing to the future of antibiotics through his work coordinating ENABLE and ENABLE-2 for over a decade.

Election to the EAM Fellowship is decided through a rigorous nomination and evaluation process by existing Academy members. It recognizes outstanding achievements and leadership in microbiology at a European level.

"I am genuinely pleased by this recognition, but I am also very aware that science is a collective effort. The talented students and researchers who have come through my group over the years deserve a large share of the credit for whatever I have contributed to the field”, says Diarmaid.

Diarmaid joins former UAC director, Professor Dan Andersson, who has been an EAM Fellow since 2012. These recognitions reflect the strength of antibiotic resistance research at Uppsala University and within the UAC.

At UAC, we are proud to see Diarmaid's contributions to the field recognized in this way. We congratulate him warmly on this well-deserved honor.
