Kate's PhD project will seek to measure the impact of interpersonal reconciliation mechanisms on risk factors for participation in a mass atrocity in Sri Lanka. In so doing, her study will contribute new empirical evidence against which previous claims can be judged. In addition to testing theoretical claims about the links between reconciliation and atrocity prevention, her research aims to contribute to indicator development for both reconciliation outcomes and atrocity risk. The project will incorporate an innovative approach to indicator development, using community-based qualitative fieldwork to define locally relevant indicators of reconciliation and atrocity risk.
