The Hugo Valentin Center changes name
As of 1 January 2025, the Hugo Valentin Centre has changed its name to Uppsala Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (UHGS).
The name Hugo Valentin Centre was adopted in connection with the merger of the Centre for Multiethnic Research and the Programme for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in 2010. As a result of the discontinuation of minority research at the Centre in 2022, thoughts have arisen about changing the name in a way that better reflects the Centre's research and educational profile. This is expected to facilitate communication both nationally and internationally.
The name change is part of a broader initiative to strengthen research and teaching in the subject of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Uppsala University. Accordingly, the Faculty of History and Philosophy has taken the initiative to establish an bachelor’s programme in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Together with the existing Master's programme in the same subject, Uppsala University will thereby offer an international education of the highest standard in the subject.
The annual Hugo Valentin Lecture, since 2001 hosted by the Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University, will continue as previously and highlight the importance of Hugo Valentin for the historical development of the subject in Sweden.
We look forward to an exciting future under the new name and continue our commitment to research and education in Holocaust and genocide studies at Uppsala University.
