Welcome to Quo Vadis, America? A symposium organized by the Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS) and Uppsala Forum.
Event description
In recent years, there has been a growing discussion and concern about the direction the United States is heading. Only ten years ago, President Barack Obama expressed optimism about the American experiment. Today, turbulence and conflict seem to characterize the United States, and both democratic institutions and processes have begun to be questioned. At the same time, we know that the United States has weathered many crises in the past, and that the American tradition includes resilience and the capacity to renew itself.
The United States has long been regarded as a global leader in politics, economics, and culture, and exercises great influence on the rest of the world. It is thus important to understand the current situation, but also to critically examine its roots.
The Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS) at Uppsala University invites you to a symposium on June 4, 2024 to discuss how we can better understand events in the United States, as well as where the country is going. The symposium includes prominent speakers from both sides of the Atlantic, based in universities, think tanks, and the media.
