Successful symposium with the theme of mental health
Every year, Uppsala University, together with Göran Gustafsson's Foundations, invites an internationally renowned researcher in medicine to give a lecture. This year's lecture was held together with Uppsala University's Center for Women's Mental Health during the Reproductive Lifespan, WOMHER. This year's theme was mental health and Professor Ned H. Kalin, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, was invited as keynote speaker.
On March 24, 2022 year's Göran Gustafsson lecture in medicine was held at Uppsala University's Humanities Theater. The symposium was open to the public and arranged in a hybrid format with an audience both on-site and digitally via Zoom and gathered all together about 130 people. Vice-chancellor Anders Hagfeldt and Vice-Rector Mats Larhed held a welcoming, followed by an afternoon with scientific presentations. Moderated by Deputy Vice-rector Eva Tiensuu Janson and Professor Agneta Skoog Svanberg, seven researchers at Uppsala University, active in WOMHER, presented short lectures in Swedish.

The afternoon's keynote lecture by Ned H. Kalin was given in English and was entitled Anxiety and Depression in Childhood: Studies on Underlying Circuits and Molecules. Ned H. Kalin's research focuses on finding basic mechanisms that link stress and the development of psychopathology and on understanding the mechanisms that make some children more vulnerable to developing anxiety and depression. In addition to his research activities, he treats patients who suffer from anxiety and depression and who do not respond to standard treatment. Kalin is also the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Psychiatry.
After the symposium ended, an exclusive roundtable discussion was arranged with Professor Ned H. Kalin together with young researchers from Uppsala University. The young researchers had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with Professor Ned H. Kalin for an hour. The interest in the roundtable discussion was great and there were engaging and interesting discussions.
WOMHER is very grateful to everyone who participated, especially thanks to the Göran Gustafsson Foundation and the management of the scientific domain of Medicine and Pharmacy who raised the theme of mental health by gathering current experts in the field.
