The winner of the BUP Mobility Grant 2024

We are happy to announce that Mariia Kaidash from V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University and the project 'Detection of anthropogenic pollutants in surface waters by new materials' has won the BUP Mobility Grant 2024. The project aims to contribute to the sustainability of the Baltic Sea Region and water basins of Ukraine by developing combined chemical approaches for the quantitative detection and removal of anthropogenic pollutants from surface waters.

The BUP Mobility Grant is meant to develop and strengthen the cooperation among young researchers in the Baltic Sea Region. The grant is intended to support young scholars from BUP participating universities in their research on sustainable development.

Mariia shares some information about her research and the project:

"My chemical research organisation is situated in eastern Ukraine, in the city of Kharkiv. These days, for known reasons, it is problematic for our researchers to continue a normal workflow in their laboratories. Even so, we try our best to maintain a state-of-the-art perspective in science. We want to continue our conversation with the global scientific community despite numerous obstacles invading our country. With the BUP Mobility Grant I take the possibility to further strengthen my professional skills and my research gets access to the necessary infrastructure to conduct it at the proper level. The main goal of my project, which I will now realise at Uppsala University, is to develop combined chemical approaches for the detection and removal of anthropogenic pollutants from surface waters, which will promote the sustainable development in the region."

Mariias project additionally aims to promote sustainable development in the quantification of toxic elements using atomic and molecular electron spectroscopy methods. The project will be carried out at the Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University.
