The Baltic Sea Region (BSR), once an area of relative stability and cooperation, has undergone a significant transformation since the onset of the war in Ukraine. This conflict has not only reshaped the geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe but has also had profound implications for the security dynamics of the Baltic Sea and its littoral states.
The Baltic Sea Region changed its paradigm from ‘soft security’ to the BSR which is mobilizing on defense and looking into resilience in different spheres. It is evident that the driving force of this change is Russia’s aggressive policy since 2014 and the ongoing war since 2022. Security has become one of the most important issues for the Baltic Sea Region cooperation.
The presenters will touch upon the following questions:
- The impact of the Russian war on the Security in the Baltic Sea Region;
- NATO’s evolving force posture in the Baltics;
- Regional cooperation in the BSR after Russia's invasion of Ukraine: EUSBSR, CBSS, and HELCOM;
- The development of resilience in information warfare.
The theme of this seminar is connected to the upcoming BUP Symposium 'Strengthening the Security and Resilience of the Baltic Sea Region – Environmental, Political, Social, and Economic Shocks and Crises'.
The presenters are:
- Dr. Damian Szacawa, Assistant Professor at the Institute of International Relations, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Poland; Head of Department of the Baltics, Institute of Central Europe, Poland.
