BUP Master Thesis Training 2026

The BUP is pleased to announce the fifth edition of the Master Thesis Training (MTT). The event will take place on 14-17 April in Uppsala. The MTT is an opportunity for master students at BUP participating universities to come together in an interdisciplinary and intercultural environment within the sphere of sustainability science. The event provides a chance for students to gain additional supervision from an expert on their thesis, expand their presentation and research skills, develop connections with students from all around the Baltic Sea Region and become better acquainted with academic perspectives.

For this edition, students will have the opportunity to choose their own supervisor. A list of potential supervisors, including their background, experience, and research interests, can be found below. Students are invited to select their preferred supervisors in the application form. The organisers will then assign supervisors based on availability, demand, and other internal factors.

The event will accept participants from BUP participating universities who are studying towards a master's degree and are working on their thesis during the spring term of 2026. The content of the thesis should be related to sustainability science and include a clear connection to the Baltic Sea Region. The Master Thesis Training will be held mainly on-site in Uppsala.

Previous editions of the Master Thesis Training have been highly rated by those who participated. In 2025, the participants gave the event a rating of 8.6/10 with students remarking that the MTT was helpful for them in improving their thesis. Event report from the MTT 2025.

Objectives of the training

  • Provide students with the opportunity to receive constructive feedback on their thesis from an expert supervisor and from peers from different BUP participating universities.
  • Offer students the space to meet and discuss scientific problems with a focus on sustainability in an interdisciplinary and regional context.
  • Create a space for students to connect with peers in similar stages of their thesis process and to learn about the scientific traditions and academic cultures of other universities.
  • Enhance key skills related to thesis work, including academic writing, presentation, time management, research, critical thinking, and the use of AI.
  • Encourage academic cooperation and networking among students and supervisors within the BUP community.

Profile

I am a PhD candidate at Uppsala University, based on campus Gotland. I have experience in marine research and management spanning the tropics to the polar regions. My work is heavily influenced by social-ecological systems thinking and much of my research aims to consider management problems from a holistic perspective. This research is interdisciplinary in nature and I have developed experience in both quantitative and qualitative methods.

My PhD research on marine protected area management and how such forms of management work for seagrasses in the Topical Indo-Pacific. However, during my master’s degree I was investigating a novel pelagic fish species in Icelandic waters, using species distributions models to predict presence under current and future climate conditions. I have also spent a period working as a fisheries observer, which has provided some interesting perspectives on fisheries management from outside of academia.

I hold a BSc (zoology), MSc (environmental dynamics and climate change), PGCE (biology and outdoor education), MRM (coastal and marine management) and licentiate degree (natural resources and sustainable development).

PhD candidate

Adam Mickiewicz University

Department of water protection

Profile

I am a hydrobiologist and PhD researcher studying freshwater ecosystems, with a focus on mussels - both native and invasive species. My work combines ecology and ecotoxicology. I currently research how climate change and human-driven pollution impact mussel populations. In particular, I investigate chemicals used in lake restoration to reduce eutrophication. These products are meant to improve water quality, but we still know little about how they affect aquatic animals. My goal is to find out whether they might have negative effects on mussel populations or even influence the spread of invasive species.

I have solid experience working with students. I have completed an Academic Teaching course, supervised Bachelor’s and Master’s projects, and regularly support students during laboratory work. Currently, I work as a lab technician at the Department of Water Protection (AMU). I also mentored students during the Science and Sail programme in Lithuania, where they worked on a project about microplastic pollution. I am always happy to discuss new ideas and support students in developing their own research projects.

Uppsala University

Department of Earth Sciences

Profile

I am a PhD student in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, Earth Sciences Department, at Uppsala University, working on a project on the impact of consumer choices on the marine biodiversity of the Baltic Sea. This will entail taking biodiversity measurements in the field, most likely modelling, and doing participant observations, interviews or focus groups with consumers in the island of Gotland.

PhD candidate

Linnaeus University

Department of Biology and environmental sciences

Profile

Although I find myself predominantly studying marine sediment these days, I consider myself to be a sedimentary geologist and geochemist. I am currently researching the fairly recently discovered methane ebullition fields in the Baltic Sea, where methane generated by intense degradation of organic matter becomes supersaturated in the seafloor, causing precipitation of gas bubbles that ultimately rise towards the atmosphere. This includes sedimentary analysis, gas analysis (e.g., gas chromatography, isotope ratio mass spectrometry) and geochemical analysis. So what led me here?
During my masters thesis I studied a number of Jurassic cephalopod fossils, and how what happened during their degradation influenced, or even enabled, their preservation. After my graduation, I went on to work in industry and invented a new interpolation method for the chemical estimation of sedimentary structures, by correlating geochemistry with environmental reconstruction and sequence stratigraphy, using the past for the benefit of the future. These experiences taught me the complexity of the biogeochemical processes involved in the degradation of organic matter, and how geochemistry of sedimentary structures behave across space as a result of their depositional past, which led me to research methane ebullition and pursue my aim to use the past for benefit of the future.

Profile

Currently, I am focused on the human-technology interface by exploring the social implementation of a relatively new and niche sustainable energy technology in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Initially trained as a civil engineer, I then spent several years working on the technical side of satellite data analysis before transitioning to behavioral decision science (i.e., the psychology of how people make behavioral decisions) during my Ph.D., where I assessed household climate vulnerability through behavioral decision science (through interviews and a survey) and remote sensing (through image analysis using machine learning). How to apply

Through the application link, you should upload a summary of your master’s thesis directly to the online form, including the following information:

1) problem formation, 2) research topic and interests (your motivations and knowledge gap), 3) research question(s), purpose or aim (not all needed), 4) relation to sustainability science and connection to the Baltic Sea Region, 5) methodology (i.e. what you will do, why and how), 6) timetable of thesis (what have you done so far, what is still to do).

Please be as precise as possible, even if you're still in the early stages of your thesis. We understand that there may be changes before the training in April.

Only applications written in English will be considered.

The deadline to apply is 8 February 2026.

The applicants will receive a response at the latest on 24 February 2026.

Practical information

The event will take place at the Geo Centre at Uppsala University. A limited number of online participation spots will be available for students who are unable to travel for exceptional reasons (e.g. priority for online participation will be given to Ukrainian male students who can't travel).

As all program sessions will be held in Uppsala, only parts of the event will be streamed live for online participants. Therefore, online participation does not offer the same learning and interaction opportunities as on-site attendance, and some workshops and activities will be conducted exclusively on-site due to their practical nature. Once admitted, participation is mandatory for both on-site and online students in order to receive a certificate.

There is no fee to take part in Master Thesis Training in Uppsala since your participation will be covered by The Baltic University Programme.

The MTT is free of charge for master students from BUP participating universities and all costs of accommodation, food and activities will be covered by the BUP. Students will be accommodated in shared hotel rooms with other participants.

All students must cover their travel costs to and from Uppsala, Sweden.

Students are encouraged to explore funding options through their home universities, such as Erasmus+ mobility grants.

If you don't show up or cancel your participation with late notice, after 13 March 2026, we hold the right to charge you or your university department the cost of your participation (320 €). We only accept late cancellations due to illness, family-related matters, or force majeure, if sufficient documents can be provided (doctor's certificate, etc.).
