Stina Lindegren is a researcher in gender-based violence and health at the National Center for Knowledge on Men's Violence against Women at Uppsala University.

Stina holds a PhD, is a social worker/lic. healthcare counselor with basic psychotherapy training and 13 years of work experience in correctional services and opioid maintenance treatment.

Research

My doctoral thesis focuses on how men convicted of sexual offenses experience various forms of support and risk-reducing treatment for issues related to their crimes.

As a researcher in gender-based violence and health at the National Centre for Knowledge on Men’s Violence Against Women, I lead the research project “Not Just Victims, Not Just Perpetrators”: Young People’s Narratives of Violence, Gender, and Agency.

I am also a researcher in a project focused on developing evidence-based support for individuals who wish to discontinue Opioid Maintenance Treatment for Opioid Addiction.

As a previous postdoctoral researcher in social work, I studied preventive interventions aimed at the early identification of children and families in need of support.

Thus, my research centers on violence and preventive social/psychosocial work at both the secondary and tertiary levels. I use both quantitative and qualitative methods in my research, including interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis.

Ongoing research projects

Project leader for the research project “Not Just Victims, Not Just Perpetrators”: Young People’s Narratives of Violence, Gender, and Agency.

The project is a collaboration between the National Centre for Knowledge on Men’s Violence Against Women and Stockholm University. The study focuses on the links between early exposure to violence, polyvictimization, gender norms, and the development of agency and coping strategies.

Participating researcher in the project Discontinuing Opioid Maintenance Treatment for Opioid Addiction: Developing Evidence-Based Support for Safe Tapering

Principal Investigator: Professor Björn Johnson, Lund University. Reference Number: 2025-00309. Project Period: 2026-01-01 to 2028-12-31 Funder: Forte

Many individuals receiving Opioid Maintenance Treatment (OMT) find the treatment helpful, but some wish to eventually taper off the medication and live without opioids. Discontinuation, however, carries significant risks such as relapse and overdose, and currently there are no clear, evidence-based guidelines or structured support for safe tapering.

This research project investigates how a safe and secure tapering process can be carried out and identifies the types of support needed during tapering. The project is based on registry studies and interviews with both patients and staff. The results will be used to develop and test an initial intervention for tapering support.

We are currently recruiting participants for the study.

Subproject: School Social Work – Preventive Social Work and Early Interventions with Elementary School Students

This project examines the initiative of placing social workers in an elementary school in Uppsala. The study focuses on method development and insights from both children's and professionals' perspectives. This subproject is part of the Forte-funded research program What Works? (see above).

Subproject: Social Services' Work with Honor-Based Violence

This subproject investigates how social services work with children and young people who are subjected to honor-based violence and oppression. The subproject is part of the Forte-funded research program What Works? (see above).

Research networks

Convener of the Nordic Network on Prevention of Child Sexual Offending (NN-PCSO). The network was established by Kasper Jörgensen in 2023 and was financed by the Nordic Research Council of Criminology during the first year.

Participant of the researcher network organized by the National Board of Health and Welfare in the national coordination of knowledge development regarding work with individuals who perpetrate domestic violence.
