Mats Målqvist is professor of global health and the director of Uppsala Institute of Sustainable Transformations. He also leads SWEDESD - Sustainability Learning and Research Center at the medical faculty (https://www.swedesd.uu.se/). His research centers on social sustainability, with a focus on equity and empowerment. He has published 120+ scientific articles within the areas of implementation science, SRHR, maternal, newborn and child health, and health systems delivery.

Biography

Mats Målqvist is the director of Uppsala University Institute for Sustainable Transformations, which is a part of Uppsala University Future Institutes (UUniFI).

At the Department of Women's and Children's Health he is leading SWEDESD, a transdisciplinary centre for health equity, sustainability and transformation (https://www.swedesd.uu.se/).

Between 2013-2016 he, as the Executive Director, Mats Målqvist developed and established Siphilile Maternal and Child Health, a community-based organisation working in maternal and child health in Eswatini (https://www.siphilile.org/).

Mats Målqvist is a medical doctor by profession, and has a Master’s degree in Media and Communications Studies. He earned his PhD in International Health in 2010 at Uppsala University. He became Associate Professor in 2013 and Professor of Global Health in 2018. As a medical doctor, Mats Målqvist has been working as a resident doctor within emergency medicine (2007-2010) and pediatrics (2010-2013).

Research

As a global health researcher, the main focus of Mats Målqvist’s research has been on the implementation of interventions for improved maternal and child health in Sweden as well as in low and middle-income settings, where he has participated in and led research projects in Vietnam, Nepal, Uganda and Tanzania. He has been working in Swaziland, leading and implementing a community-based peer support intervention addressing socio-economic barriers to health. Structural determinants of health is another focus area of Prof Målqvist, exploring inequities in health and the impact of different interventions on unjust differences in health outcome and social sustainability. Mats Målqvist has supervised 9 PhD students to completion as main supervisor and been the co-supervisor for 5 PhDs. He is currently main supervisor for 5 and co-supervisor for 4 PhD students.
