Short presentation

Stephen Donovan is Associate Professor (Docent) in English Literature specializing in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century literature, media, and imperial culture. His research projects include: The Congo Free State and European Culture (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond 2014-17); Investigative Journalism and the Novel in Britain 1860-1930 (Vetenskaprådet 2018-21); and Rhodesia in British Culture 1889-1939 (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond 2022).

Biography

I took my BA in English at Oxford University in 1991 and my PhD in English at Gothenburg University in 2001, after which I carried out postdoc work at Royal Holloway College, Blekinge Institute of Technology, and NYU before joining Uppsala's Department of English in 2005. I have also taught as a visiting lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, the University of Indonesia, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Most recently, I was a research associate at Queen Mary University London (2021-2022) and Leeds Beckett University (2023).

My primary research interests are Victorian and Modernist literature, periodicals history, early film, and imperial culture. I have written widely on Joseph Conrad, particularly in relation to popular culture and serialization, and am the creator of Conrad First: The Joseph Conrad Periodical Archive (www.conradfirst.net), which makes available Conrad's works as they first appeared in over two hundred magazines and newspapers.

My latest monograph, Undercover: Victorian Investigative Journalism in Fact and Fiction, co-authored with Matthew Rubery, will be published by Cambridge University Press in April 2025, and I am currently completing a study titled Charterland: Rhodesia in British Culture 1889-1930. I have served on evaluative boards for national research bodies in Sweden, Poland, and Portugal and been a PhD examiner in Australia, South Africa, and the UK.
