Biography

I am a Professor of Molecular Epidemiology at Uppsala University and lead a research group focused on identifying underlying causes and risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. I hold a degree in Veterinary Medicine (SLU, 2005) and earned my PhD in 2009 with a thesis on diabetes in dogs. I then transitioned to human health research during a postdoctoral fellowship in medical and genetic epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet.

I became Associate Professor in Epidemiology in 2013 and established my own research group in 2016. Since then, we have developed and applied advanced bioinformatics pipelines in large-scale population-based studies, focusing on proteomics, metabolomics, and register-based data. Our work includes causal inference using Mendelian randomization and the linkage of national health registers covering millions of individuals, both adults and children. One of our earlier studies addressed the long-standing question of whether early-life exposure to animals is associated with childhood asthma—a study that attracted significant media attention (e.g., BBC World, The Times) and informed new national guidelines for pediatric pet ownership.

I have received several academic awards, including the Oscar Prize from Uppsala University (2015), the Göran Gustafsson Prize for Young Researchers (2016), the Thureus Prize (2021), the Leif Groop Award (2023), and most recently the Göran Gustafsson Prize in Medicine 2025 for my epidemiological studies of metabolic and cardiovascular disease. This recognition and accompanying research funding allow us to deepen our investigations into the role of the oral and gut microbiota in vascular health.

I have received major grants as Principal Investigator from the Swedish Research Council, FORMAS, the Swedish Diabetes Foundation, and the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, and was awarded an ERC Starting Grant in 2018 to study microbiota and vascular health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I contributed to national response efforts through involvement in the Covid Symptom Study Sweden and the CRUSH-Covid project.

My long-term goal is to build a world-class research environment in molecular epidemiology at Uppsala University, attract international and diverse talent, and generate knowledge that can lead to meaningful improvements for patients and society. I also consider it a core mission to help educate and mentor the next generation of researchers.
