Peter Frykholm tog läkarexamen 1991 vid Uppsala Universitet, gjorde sedan sin allmäntjänstgöring och specialistutbildning inom anestesi- och intensivvård på Länssjukhuset Gävle-Sandviken. Han disputerade 2002 på en avhandling med titeln Cerebral Ischemia Studied with PET and Microdialysis, efter doktorandutbildning på Uppsala Universitet med Per Enblad som huvudhandledare. Docentur tilldelades 2013.
Som anestesiolog har Peter Frykholm subspecialiserat sig inom barnanestesi- och intensivvård, bl a genom ett kliniskt fellowship vid barnintensivvårdsavdelningen i Auckland, Nya Zeeland. Har har även engagerat sig inom områdena respiration, intravenös access och svår luftväg, inom SFAI och lokalt.
Peter har ett brett forskningintresse med klinisk förankring. Aktuella områden är metoder för monitorering och optimering av lungfunktion och ventilation under anestesi och intensivvård, fysiologi, farmakologi och farmakodynamik inom barnanestesi, betydelsen av fasta inför barnanestesi samt immobilisering av lungor vid diagnostik och behandling.
