Ylva Ekström, PhD, Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication Studies at the Department of Informatics and Media

Since the pandemic, I have been involved in various types of collaboration with Region Uppsala in the area of ​​health communication. Currently, my colleague Therese Monstad and I are involved as researchers in Region Uppsala's collaboration network, which plans, implements and evaluates various efforts to strengthen mental health literacy among the residents of Uppsala County.

Biography

I defended my PhD in 2010 on the dissertation "We are like Chameleons": Changing Mediascapes, Cultural Identities and City Sisters in Dar es Salaam. I have worked several years with education and research in the area of communication for development and social change, and have done extensive field work in primarily East Africa. My research interests include the role of media in everyday life and for identity construction; gender and representation; new media, culture and social change, and I am methodologically primarily engaged in ethnographic research.

Research

CRUSH Covid (Time period: 2020-2022)

CRUSH COVID was an innovative multidisciplinary research project, in which researchers at five academic departments of Uppsala University collaborated with Uppsala Region. The purpose of the project was to survey and attempt to control local outbreaks of COVID-19 in Uppsala County. Managing the Digital Transformation of Physical Space (TROPHY) (Time period: 2018-11-15--2021-02-28)

The research project aimed to develop knowledge and tools to facilitate communication (between employees, customers, clients, visitors and partners) in the boundary between the digital and the physical space. The goal was to identify, and then create an understanding of, the factors that contribute to successful interaction and communication at the border between the digital and the physical space. Such knowledge contributes to research in the field, while providing normative guidance for managers in their efforts to effectively lead an organization toward successful interactions both internally and externally.
