A community centered around electrochemistry

The Ångström Electrochemistry Initiative (ÅEI) was created in 2023 to build a community around electrochemistry – a widely used subject in many active fields of research and teaching.

Our mission

  • Enhance the visibility of our discipline at all levels.
  • Promote cross-program collaboration.
  • Create an open forum to discuss scientific pursuits, from fundamental research to innovative applications.
  • Educate and train the new generation of electrochemists.
  • Maximise the use of central facilities for research advancement.

Research focus areas

  • Battery technology
  • Electro- and photo-catalysis
  • Fuel cells
  • Corrosion
  • Electrodeposition and surface functionalisation
  • Method development for in situ/operando spectroscopy and imaging

"Electrochemistry as a field is growing at a tremendous rate. It was central to the emergence of chemistry as a discipline through the discovery of elements, and is now poised to revolutionize energy, neuroscience, and organic synthesis, among more traditional applications in corrosion prevention and electrodeposition.

… In spite of the expanding opportunities for academic and industrial electrochemists, particularly in the growing energy-storage sector, rigorous training of electrochemists is generally lacking at academic institutions ..."
