Awarded for innovated cell-penetrating peptide against viral disease
Prof. Ylva Ivarsson, at the research programme for Biochemistry at the Department of Chemistry – BMC, has received the award "Attractive Innovation Project" from Uppsala University Innovation (UU Innovation) for the work that she has done, together with Prof. Anna Överby Wernstedt, Umeå University, and Prof. Jakob Nilsson, at the University of Copenhagen, to develop and patent a peptide that can penetrate cell membranes and be transported into cells and thus inhibit diseases caused by viruses - for instance Covid-19.
In order to give the technology the best possible conditions to be useful, the team has transferred the rights to a partner who is responsible for identifying companies that want to take over the innovation project, for example pharmaceutical companies. The researchers have an option on future income from a commercialization.
The award "Attractive Innovation Project" is awarded to innovative projects and start-up companies started by researchers at Uppsala University, which received support from UU Innovation at an early stage and then received external grants that further strengthened the development opportunities.
