Innovative mass spectrometric tools to decipher the chemistry of biological systems

The function of biological systems depends on intricate chemical interactions where the molecular structure is crucial. In our group, we develop innovative mass spectrometric tools that enable small molecule characterization with isomeric precision from minute biological material, down to individual cells. Our tools include pneumatically assisted nanospray desorption electrospray ionization (PA nano-DESI) for imaging of thin tissue sections, the direct infusion probe (DIP) for molecular profiling of minute (µL) sample volumes, tapered PA nano-DESI for global chemical analysis of single cells, and surface sampling capillary electrophoresis for spatial metabolomics with isomeric resolution. Additionally, we develop data handling tools to visualize and assess our unique data formats. We also employ creative and strategic approaches for quantifying the detected analytes, tailoring solvents and pushing the mass spectrometer performances beyond the state-of-the-art.
