Professor Jörgen Hellman, the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg presents Tricking death: the voice of King Siliwangi’s spirit and practices of history making.

The project aims to research the question of how cultural heritage in the form of a legendary king in Indonesia, Siliwangi infuses hope about the future In that way crossing over and uniting two research fields, critical heritage studies and the anthropology of time The project follows up on previous research on sacred places, spiritual agency and religious bodily practices by focusing on “ in the relation to politics and the construction of history and future.

Jörgen Hellman is professor of Social Anthropology at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg Since his doctorate, he has conducted research in Indonesia on the relationship between religion and politics through the study of rituals, floods, and cultural heritage More recently, his work has shifted to Gothenburg with the Practicing Integration project, conducted in collaboration with Lisa Åkesson and Signe Askersjö. This project explores how identities and diversity are negotiated in everyday interactions in Sweden, considering integration as an ongoing process involving the entire population. Between 1995 and 2020 he led five independently funded research projects, all centered on the analysis of power relations at the intersection of the state, the individual, and public space. Prof Hellman is Co Editor of kritisk etnografi Swedish Journal of Anthropology.
