In this seminar, we revisit a concept introduced in our book Representations of Fear: Verbalising Emotion in Ancient Roman Folk Narrative (2020). Emotional topography implies that places evoke specific emotions, which may vary depending on the time of day, season or other factors. The focus is on places that elicited the emotions of fear, dread and disgust, taking cemeteries, the sea and crossroads as examples. We also discuss our theoretical sources of inspiration and how they have fed into our own model.

This is a joint research seminar between the Ethnology and Classical Archaeology and Ancient History departments.

Please note: The seminar will be held in English in the afternoon, 13:15–15:00. For the Zoom link, please email contact person Kristina Öhman no later than 31 March.
