Beyond Culture: Men's Violence Against Women in Afro-Swedish Families at the Intersection of Migration, Equality, and Institutional Distrust

This presentation examines men’s violence against women in Afro-Swedish families through the intersecting dynamics of migration, gender equality, changing family relations, and institutional distrust. Moving beyond culturalist explanations, it interrogates how violence is produced across intimate, community, and societal contexts, and how Sweden’s formal commitment to equality is experienced in everyday family life. Drawing on intersectional feminist theory, a social-ecological framework, and participatory ethnographic methods, the project centres women’s lived experiences while engaging men, community actors, and public institutions. It argues that research conducted with communities can strengthen critical knowledge and support more responsive, context-sensitive prevention and practice.
