The Militarized Sensorium
Maria Malmström (PI) and Rosa Sansones have received research funding from the Swedish Research Council for a four-year project investigating militarized material interventions, spatial planning, and development processes in Egypt and Tunisia. These countries are intriguing because, despite their enormous debts, they are at the forefront of large-scale infrastructure development. By developing a theoretical framework—the militarized sensorium —the project investigates how military presence and action can affect how individuals perceive and interact with their surroundings. This provides an overall understanding of the socio-political effects of militarization in relation to daily life and in relation to social structures.
