Uppsala University is leading the application to establish the Centre of Excellence for Deep Geothermal Energy (DEGREE) within the Swedish Energy Agency's call for proposals ‘Centre of Excellence for a Fossil-Free Energy System’. We are now inviting companies and organisations to a webinar where we will present the centre's focus, partner structure and the opportunity to become a member of the competence centre and participate in the application process.
Would you like to help lead the development of deep geothermal energy in Sweden?
Uppsala University is leading the application to establish a Competence Centre for Deep Geothermal Energy (DEGREE) within the Swedish Energy Agency's call for proposals ‘Competence Centres for a Fossil-Free Energy System’.
We are now inviting companies and organisations to a webinar where we will present the centre's focus, partner structure and the opportunity to become a member of the competence centre and participate in the application.
Deep geothermal energy provides local, weather-independent energy around the clock with low climate impact, limited land use and minimal dependence on global supply chains. It is not just an energy solution – it is a question of competitiveness, environmental responsibility, security and long-term resilience.
Deep geothermal energy is a strategic opportunity for industry, the public sector and civil society:
• Energy companies and industry – predictable, local and fossil-free energy with long-term cost stability
• Mining and materials companies – combined energy production and extraction of critical raw materials with a reduced environmental footprint
• Technology, service and finance sectors – new markets in drilling, digitalisation, system integration and sustainable energy assets
• Public sector and total defence – strengthened energy security, supply preparedness and robust social infrastructure
• Entrepreneurs and new companies – business development, innovation and export opportunities in a growing European market
• Civil society and local communities – increased participation, knowledge and social acceptance through transparency and co-creation
The market is moving – positioning is happening now
The European Commission is expected to present a European action plan for geothermal energy in 2026, and there is rapid upscaling internationally.
Several leading players in energy and industry have already agreed to participate in the application and want to be involved in leading Sweden's development in this area. We are now further expanding the consortium.
The webinars provide a clear overview of the structure, partner levels and co-financing model for the application.
If this is strategically relevant to your business, you are warmly welcome to join us at the following event next week.
Together, we are establishing deep geothermal energy as a competitive and scalable part of Sweden's fossil-free energy system.
