Diabetes researchers at IGP acknowledged

At the National Digital Diabetes meeting on 15 April, the Swedish Association for Diabetes awarded Peter Seiron the prize Pre-clinical Thesis of the Year, and Olle Korsgren the prize Diabetes Researcher of the Year.

Peter Seiron defended his thesis at IGP in November, 2020, with the thesis Studies of the Pancreas: Implications for Type 1 Diabetes Aetiology. The prize motivation states that “the thesis has a high degree of originality and introduces a complementing hypothesis for the genesis of type 1 diabetes, and new pathological methods for the differentiation of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The results from the thesis can affect both children and adults with type 1 diabetes and for the correct pathological definitaion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

The motivation for Olle Korsgren’s prize includes: “Olle Korsgren has a strong focus on developing the transplantation of islet cells in diabetes but he is also involved in studies that concern preserving the insulin production in newly diagnosed adults with type 1 diabetes, and a drug that he studies might be close to the market. One of his most exiting research areas is why type 1 diabetes arises, where his ideas cause a lot of interest.”
