Funding for developing diagnosis method for prostate cancer

The support initiative Verification for collaboration at Uppsala University has granted funding to Cecilia Lindskog Bergström for development of an AI method for more accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer. The project is a collaboration with the company ContextVision.

Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death in males. Current diagnosis methods are based on manual examination of tissue biopsies and Gleason grading but unfortunately, they are both time consuming and subjective.

The funded project aims to provide the basis for development of an automated image analysis method that can assist pathologists in setting a faster and more accurate diagnosis. This will be done by identifying a reliable molecular marker for Gleason grading, using data from the Human Protein Atlas, and a new staining method developed together with ContextVision in a previous pilot project.
