Karin Forsberg Nilsson elected as new chair for Fulbright Sweden

Since July 1, 2015, professor Karin Forsberg Nilsson is appointed as new chair for Sweden Fulbright Commission.

The Fulbright Programme is one of the largest international exchange programmes in the world. Each year the Sweden Fulbright Commission selects the Swedish students and scientists that receive Fulbright grants for staying at a university in the US, and welcome the Americans that come to Sweden within the programme. The Swedish Institute for North American Studies at Uppsala University hosts a Fulbright Professor every year.

In 1946, American senator William Fulbright initiated the Fulbright programme, with the intention to increase the academic exchange between the USA and Europe. It has since become global and more than 350 000 students and scientists from 155 countries have entered the programme.

The Sweden Fulbright Commission was founded in 1952 through an agreement between Dag Hammarskjöld, appointed by the Swedish Government, and the American ambassador. Former Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson and Nobel laureate Bengt Samuelsson are among the more famous Swedish Fulbright alumni.

The Board of the Fulbright Commission consists of equal numbers of Swedish and American members. The Chancellor of the Swedish Universities and the American ambassador are appointed as honorary chairs.

“I am very honoured to be appointed chair of the Fulbright Commission Board and to further promote research exchange between Sweden and the US”, says Karin Forsberg Nilsson.
